Experimental Painting Class

Have you ever wanted to see the range of things you can do with your paints? The possibilities will open you up and get you out of any rut. From learning about traditional oil mediums to thick clear layers of glossy acrylics, we will try it all. We will pour, brush, scoop, squeegee, and soak. Many of the processes are completely unpredictable and surprising — even if you only plan to paint traditionally, this will show you ways to use your materials you never dreamt of. All supplies provided. 9/13–11/8 (no class 10/4).

Beginning Oil Painting

Beginning Oil Painting Class

Saturdays, 1–5 pm · 9/12–11/7 · 8 × 4-hour sessions, once a week

All materials provided for an introduction to oil painting, covering paint application, composition, color, and process across eight sessions.

Weeks 1–4: Studies in color and composition from a large still-life installation on provided boards — starting with cropping and designing compositions in black and white, then mixing color and composing beyond the inherent color of the setup.

Weeks 5–8: Working on a large canvas with the benefit of your studies — working quickly rather than copying the studies onto the large surface. Flexibility, changes, and accidents encouraged, using liberal amounts of provided oil paint with scraping and reapplying to take a responsive approach. No class 10/3.

Tuition includes:

  • Personalized instruction
  • Small class size (up to 10 students)
  • Painting tools except brushes*
  • High-quality heavy canvas (12 oz.) and heavy-duty stretcher bars
  • Oil paints, oil medium
  • Snacks

*Brushes are very personal — please supply your own.
